Origins
She taught parents the art of Infant Massage out of her home for several years. At the request of childbirth educators, she developed a training program for instructors in 1978 and began to train instructors to teach the program she had developed through her training in India, Swedish and Reflexology methods, and her knowledge of yoga postures and poses she adapted for babies. She named the strokes, designed a special routine for colicky babies, and developed a course for parents which became the core curriculum for her upcoming organization. After several years, she trained a group of instructors to train other instructors, and the International Association of Infant Massage was born, incorporated as a nonprofit organization in 1986. The IAIM now has over 27 chapters worldwide, and her instruction has been translated in many languages. Vimala was able to travel to India many times during these years, and had the great fortune of working in Mother Teresas Shishu Bhavan (baby hospital) in Calcutta. Since then, Vimala has continued to write for many magazines, and has authored several more books. In addition, now that her children are grown she has the time to pursue fiber arts and has become an award winning quilt artist. Vimala continues to write about parenting and quiltmaking, and to produce her works of fiber art. |
