Certified Infant Massage Instructor (CIMI) Requirements

The International Association of Infant Masage (IAIM) trains and certifies CIMIs who in turn teach parents and caregivers to massage their babies. The CIMI teaches small parent/baby classes, classes in conjunction with agency programs in the community or one-on-one classes.

The process for becoming a CIMI is as follows:

  1. Attend a four-day Infant Massage Certification Training that is presented by an IAIM approved Trainer. Our trainers are contracted to present the course as approved by IAIM - US Chapter which is 30.9 contact hours (25 hours 45 minutes) of instruction (not including the take home exam and the practicum).
  2. Complete required reading.
    1. Infant Massage: A Handbook for Loving Parents and Infant Massage Instructor's Manual by Vimala Schneider McClure. Students will receive one copy of each of these books at the training. The cost for the books is included with training fee.
    2. The Baby Book by William Sears, MD and Martha Sears, RN. and Touching by Ashley Montagu. These books are not included with training materials.
  3. Complete the take home exam (open book).
  4. Teach the five sessions of Infant Massage to five parent/baby units. All five parent/babies can be in one class for five sessions or taught as five sessions on a one-on-one class. At the end of the five sessions CIMIžs obtain written evaluations from each participant.
